In Lazio, a significant number of grape varieties, both indigenous and international, are cultivated. White grape varieties, such as Trebbiano and Malvasia, or Bellone, which is widespread in the Castelli Romani area, account for 76% of the total. Among these, we find Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio (with the Bellone, Cacchione, and Bonvino Bianco clones), Trebbiano Giallo, Trebbiano Toscano, and Trebbiano del Lazio. Grechetto is a grape variety primarily cultivated in the areas of Viterbo at the borders with Umbria.
Among the black grape varieties, the most important native one is undoubtedly Cesanese, which forms the basis of wines of absolute excellence. In Lazio, Montepulciano, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and in some cases also Barbera are also grown.
In a landscape like that of Lazio, dominated by indigenous and local grape varieties, there is little room for international varieties. The cultivation of international black grape varieties is minor, among which we find the most important imported varieties, such as Merlot, with 6% of the regional vineyard, more than Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon, at a considerable distance, with less than 1% of the regional vineyard. More or less the same vineyard area is occupied by Chardonnay, present as a complementary variety in several blends, but almost never as a varietal wine.
