The Pampanaro is an ancient white grape variety native to Lazio, Italy. Its cultivation area, which was quite extensive until the first half of the last century, spanned the southern part of Frosinone. Recently rediscovered, Pampanaro was added to the National Register of Grape Varieties in 2010, along with Capolongo, Maturano, Lecinaro, and Rosciola. These varieties were revived thanks to a project by ARSIAL (Agenzia Regionale per lo Sviluppo e l’Innovazione dell’Agricoltura nel Lazio), aimed at identifying the best clones of these varieties already listed in the regional register, with the goal of highlighting their distinctive features and promoting their development in the region. Little is known about this variety, and only a few producers currently offer it.
Pampanaro has medium-sized, round berries with a thick, fairly firm, and waxy skin of yellow color with greenish reflections. The resulting wine is straw yellow in color, with an intriguing aroma profile, including the same terpenes found in Traminer Aromatico. Its aromatics suggest lychee, rose, and grapefruit. The wine has a good structure and persistence, finishing with a slightly balsamic note.
