The Traminer Aromatico is a pink-skinned grape variety originating from Alto Adige, particularly in the area of Termeno sulla Strada del Vino (in German, Tramin), about 20 km south of Bolzano. However, it is also present in many other Italian regions. The German appellation Gewürztraminer is reserved exclusively for the Alto Adige DOC.
As the name suggests, Traminer is an aromatic grape, meaning its wines carry the same primary aromas present in the mature grape berries. The wine’s softness and rich texture, combined with its powerful aromatic bouquet featuring fruity notes of lychee, passionfruit, pineapple, and spicy undertones of pepper, cloves, and star anise, along with floral hints of rose, make it an intriguing pairing for spicy white meat dishes like Tandoori, smoked salmon, or blue-veined cheeses. In passito versions, it also serves as an exceptional meditation wine.
The intense and distinctive aromatic profile of Traminer Aromatico makes it one of the most characteristic and easily recognizable wines, even for less experienced tasters. Outside Italy, notable examples include the Gewürztraminer wines from the Rhine Valley. Alsatian Gewürztraminer is spicy, intense, dry, and pungent, with strong tropical notes and an imposing acidity. In contrast, those from the German side tend to be less extreme, often featuring a residual sugar content that enhances their smoothness on the palate.
