The Maturano grape variety is an ancient indigenous variety from Lazio, originating in the Val di Comino, recently rediscovered and registered in the National Register of Wine Grape Varieties in 2010, along with the Capolongo b., Lecinaro n., Pampanaro b., and Rosciola rs. varieties. These grape varieties were recovered thanks to a project by Arsial (Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture in Lazio), aimed at identifying the most qualified clones of varieties already registered in the Regional Register of Wine Grape Varieties, to highlight their distinctive elements and allow their development in the region. Little is known about this grape variety, and very few producers currently offer it. Maturano is a moderately vigorous variety, with medium-sized, loose clusters, often with one or two wings. The berry is spheroidal, bluish-black, and covered with abundant pruina.
From the Maturano grape, a wine is obtained with a straw-yellow color with golden reflections and an intense and complex nose, with fruity aromas that prominently feature notes of pineapple, papaya, peach, banana, and yellow apple. On the palate, the wine made from the Maturano grape variety reveals fullness, balance, acidic structure, and pleasant sapidity, along with good persistence and hints of tropical fruit, with herbaceous notes on a mineral background.
