Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is an indigenous grape variety from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, named for the distinctive red color of its peduncle (the base of the rachis or stem). Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso belongs to the larger Refosco family, which, in addition to its close relative Refosco Nostrano or Refosco di Faedis, includes grape varieties like Terrano or Cagnina di Romagna (a synonym for Terrano), all sharing a common origin with the same family of wild vines, as confirmed by recent DNA studies. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is predominantly found in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, its area of excellence, and in Veneto, where it was recently included in newly approved DOCs. It is present in the DOCs Colli Orientali del Friuli, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Grave, and Friuli Latisana. It is also found in the Venetian section of Lison Pramaggiore DOC.
Like other Refosco grapes, the origins of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are not entirely clear, but current evidence suggests it is indigenous to the Friuli area. This grape was well-known in antiquity and was praised by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder in the first century for the quality of the wine it produced. Since the 1980s, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso has seen renewed interest along with other Friuli-Venezia Giulia grapes, beginning its journey to international fame. Ampelographers long thought that Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso was related to Marzemino, a grape grown in the San Michele all’Adige region of Trentino. Later, more accurate DNA analysis identified Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso as a parent of Marzemino. In Friuli, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso vineyards are planted on both hilly and flat terrain. The grapes require sufficient access to warmth and sunlight, which are crucial factors in deciding where to plant the vines. Despite its slow ripening, the grape is highly resistant to rot, which can develop during autumn rains.
Traditionally vinified, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso produces a very edgy, tannic, and acidic wine, which can make it somewhat harsh and tempestuous. It is a rebellious grape variety that requires careful handling and time spent aging in wood to become a great red wine.
