The Refosco nostrano Wine Grape in Italy

The Refosco Nostrano grape variety holds a significant place in the larger Refosco family, which also includes the more famous Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Terrano. There is no certain information about its origin, but the first traces are found in the municipalities of Torreano and Faedis, in Udine province. Refosco di Faedis and Refoscone are synonyms, as recorded in the National Vine Variety Registry. Traditionally widespread throughout Friuli-Venezia Giulia, it was once one of the region’s primary varieties, mainly due to its high productivity. However, it was gradually abandoned in favor of the more “noble” Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. Recently, Refosco Nostrano has regained interest among producers seeking grape varieties with oenological interest and great development potential.

Until now, wine production based on Refosco Nostrano has been very limited, partly because the variety was not listed among those with Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in the region. Recently, however, the grape has been included in the ampelographic composition of Friuli Colli Orientali DOC wines. The grapes of Refosco Nostrano or Refosco di Faedis possess the characteristics required for producing both young wines and wines capable of long aging. The polyphenol profiles and varietal aromas of the grape also demonstrate that Refosco Nostrano or Refosco di Faedis and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are two distinct grape varieties. Numerous tastings over time have confirmed Refosco Nostrano’s strong suitability for aging.
