Wine Appellations of Umbria

The Designations of Origin for wine in Umbria include two DOCGs, Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG and Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. The first comprises wines obtained from Sangiovese grapes for a minimum of 70%, the second wines obtained from the indigenous Sagrantino grape, vinified in purity. Both denominations are located in the province of Perugia and attest to the quality level reached by the wines of this small region. Further south is the area of Todi, with the Todi DOC designation and on the Colli Martani the Colli Martani DOC. Both these designations feature wines obtained from Grechetto white grape variety. The Colli del Trasimeno DOC covers a mid-hill territory, located on the shores of the lake, where wide valleys are surrounded by round hills. In addition to local grape varieties, Gamay del Trasimeno is cultivated here, often confused with the French origin Gamay, but actually of the same family as Grenache and Cannonau. The Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG includes wines produced with Sangiovese (min. 70%) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Canaiolo, and Colorino. Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, in purity, is dry or sweet, with an aging of at least 33 months, of which, for the dry, at least 12 months in wood. The fallback DOCs Torgiano DOC and Montefalco DOC include various types of wines from local and international grape varieties. Orvieto DOC, shared with Lazio, gives the most famous white wine of Umbria and its area, the most intensely vitiated of the region, lies on the sides of the Paglia river, heading towards the Tiber. The wines, sweet and dry, also in late harvest and noble rot versions, are obtained from Procanico (Trebbiano Toscano) and Grechetto, for at least 60%, with other white varieties, also authorized for the province of Viterbo, like Canaiolo Bianco and Malvasia Toscana. The Classica area includes the city and Lake Corbara, while red wines, blended or varietal, are dedicated to the more recent Rosso Orvietano DOC. The north shore of the artificial lake hosts the Lago di Corbara DOC, with 23 types of wine obtained from local and international grape varieties. Amelia DOC has replaced the Colli Amerini DOC and includes the territory of the municipality of Amelia and 11 other municipalities in the province of Terni, with various types of wines, including Malvasia and Vin Santo. Colli Perugini DOC, Colli Amerini DOC, and Colli Altotiberini DOC are three other relevant DOCs in Umbria.

Agrifood Appellations of Origin in Umbria

Umbria, despite being a small region, is particularly rich in history and gastronomic traditions. Every village in the region has its dish based on typical local products. For example, consider Norcia and its cured meats, first and foremost the Prosciutto di Norcia PGI. The typical agri-food products of Umbria that have received DOP or PGI recognition are numerous, such as the lentils of Castelluccio, pane di Strettura, red potatoes of Colfiorito, and black celery of Trevi. The confectionery tradition is represented by the Torcolo di San Costanzo, a typical sweet of Perugia, the Brustengolo, bread stuffed with dried fruit, and the frittelle di San Giuseppe, typical of Orvieto.
