Sardinia stands out in the Italian wine scene for its rich variety of quality wines, recognized through 17 Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) labels and a single Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) reserved for Vermentino di Gallura. This latter, a symbol of the island’s oenological excellence, represents a quality benchmark in the industry. The numerous DOCs of Sardinia cover a wide range of wines that reflect the diversity and richness of the territory, including Alghero, Arborea, Cagliari, Campidano di Terralba, Cannonau di Sardegna, Carignano del Sulcis, Girò di Cagliari, Malvasia di Bosa, Mandrolisai, Monica di Sardegna, Moscato di Sardegna, Moscato di Sorso-Sennori, Nasco di Cagliari, Nuragus di Cagliari, Semidano di Sardegna, Vermentino di Sardegna and Vernaccia di Oristano.
Cannonau di Sardegna stands out as one of the most appreciated varieties, embodying the essence and viticultural tradition of the island. To earn the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC label, wines must be made using at least 85% Cannonau grapes, and are presented to consumers in various types: Red, Rosé, Passito, and Fortified. The red Cannonau is further distinguished by the possibility of being associated with three specific geographical specifications denoting particular sub-zones: Oliena or Nepente di Oliena, Capo Ferrato, and Jerzu, each of which gives unique characteristics to the wine.
Regarding white wines, Vermentino ranks at the top, with two distinct designations: Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, covering the entire regional territory, and the more exclusive Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, confined to the northern part of the island, recognized for its superior quality.
Overall, the DOCG along with the 19 DOCs represent 66% of Sardinian wine production, highlighting the importance of these certifications for the island’s economy and culture. At the same time, the Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs), which often blend native varieties with international grapevines, account for 15% of the total production, reflecting the diversity and innovation in the Sardinian wine sector.
