Wine Appellations of Sardinia

Sardinia stands out in the Italian wine scene for its rich variety of quality wines, recognized through 17 Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) labels and a single Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) reserved for Vermentino di Gallura. This latter, a symbol of the island’s oenological excellence, represents a quality benchmark in the industry. The numerous DOCs of Sardinia cover a wide range of wines that reflect the diversity and richness of the territory, including Alghero, Arborea, Cagliari, Campidano di Terralba, Cannonau di Sardegna, Carignano del Sulcis, Girò di Cagliari, Malvasia di Bosa, Mandrolisai, Monica di Sardegna, Moscato di Sardegna, Moscato di Sorso-Sennori, Nasco di Cagliari, Nuragus di Cagliari, Semidano di Sardegna, Vermentino di Sardegna and Vernaccia di Oristano.

Cannonau di Sardegna stands out as one of the most appreciated varieties, embodying the essence and viticultural tradition of the island. To earn the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC label, wines must be made using at least 85% Cannonau grapes, and are presented to consumers in various types: Red, Rosé, Passito, and Fortified. The red Cannonau is further distinguished by the possibility of being associated with three specific geographical specifications denoting particular sub-zones: Oliena or Nepente di Oliena, Capo Ferrato, and Jerzu, each of which gives unique characteristics to the wine.

Regarding white wines, Vermentino ranks at the top, with two distinct designations: Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, covering the entire regional territory, and the more exclusive Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, confined to the northern part of the island, recognized for its superior quality.

Overall, the DOCG along with the 19 DOCs represent 66% of Sardinian wine production, highlighting the importance of these certifications for the island’s economy and culture. At the same time, the Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs), which often blend native varieties with international grapevines, account for 15% of the total production, reflecting the diversity and innovation in the Sardinian wine sector.

Agrifood Appellations of Origin in Sardinia

In addition to its renowned wine production, Sardinia also stands out in the agri-food sector with a selection of excellence products recognized with the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certification. Among these, six emblematic products of the island testify to the richness and variety of the Sardinian gastronomic heritage. The Carciofo spinnoso di Sardegna (Spiky Artichoke of Sardinia,) known for its unique organoleptic characteristics, Sardinian Saffron, precious red gold appreciated for its intense aroma and coloring properties, and “Sardegna” extra virgin olive oil, with its unique aromatic profile, reflect the island’s biodiversity. Sheep cheeses, which include Pecorino Romano, Pecorino Sardo, and Fiore Sardo, constitute a fundamental component of Sardinia’s agri-food heritage. These cheeses are the result of a long and noble agro-pastoral tradition, which has allowed Sardinia to establish itself as a leader in sheep cheese production in Europe. Pecorino Romano, with its bold flavor and grainy texture, Pecorino Sardo, with its delicate taste and soft paste, and Fiore Sardo, characterized by a traditional processing that includes smoking, are examples of how ancient knowledge and attention to quality are capable of producing world-renowned cheeses. The two agri-food products recognized as Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) are Sardinian Lamb, a meat product of the highest quality, symbol of the island’s ancient pastoral tradition, and the Culurgionis d’Ogliastra, a type of stuffed pasta that represents one of the most emblematic culinary specialties of Sardinia, particularly of the Ogliastra area.
