Molise, until 1963, was part of the “Abruzzi e Molise” region, so it is natural that the traditional viticulture and the grape varieties cultivated in Molise, given its small size, coincide with those of the neighboring regions. The most widely planted grape variety, covering 49% of the total area, is Montepulciano, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon at 8%. The Trebbiani varieties, including Abruzzese, Toscano, and Giallo, together account for 15% of the vineyard area. The third most common black grape variety is Sangiovese, which is used either on its own or blended with Montepulciano for the production of Pentro DOC Rosso. Next, among the black grape varieties, is the native Tintilia, recently rediscovered for its remarkable oenological properties after years of neglect. Following these, among the white grape varieties, is Chardonnay, and among the black grape varieties is Merlot, both covering 2% of the area. Further behind, with less than 1% of the total, are white grape varieties Malvasia Bianca, Pinot Grigio, and Falanghina, and black grape varieties Aglianico and Ciliegiolo.
