The Franconia Wine Grape in Italy

Franconia - The Grape and the Wines

The Franconia grape, mainly grown in Italy in Trentino (in the Levico area) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (in the Tagliamento area, between Cervignano and Palmanova, and to a lesser extent in the hilly areas), seems to have two distinct hypotheses of origin: the first is in Croatia, where the city of Limberg is located, hence one of its synonyms (Limberger), and the second is in Germany, in the upper Main valley, a region called Franconia (Franken in German), from which the grape’s name Blaufränkisch derives. However, the first hypothesis seems more plausible, as the cultivation of the Franconia grape is widespread in this area and its neighboring regions, especially in Austria. In Italy, Franconia was first documented in 1877 in Veneto, and its spread in northern Italy followed mainly due to Austrian rule in the area.

Franconia is a typical lowland grape variety, very resistant to phylloxera according to Di Rovasenda, who cited it as Blaufränkisch in 1887, specifying its anti-phylloxera function. The name Franconia appeared in the 1950s. Its early ripening protects it from harsher climates and shorter summer phases. Its high yields and resistance to adversities certainly favored it in the 19th century. Ampelographically, Franconia has large, pyramidal clusters with wings. The berries are medium to large, intense blue in color, with a pruinose concentration on the thick, fragrant skins. Franconia buds and matures early and prefers clay-rich, predominantly flat, and alluvial soils, such as those in Friuli-Venezia Giulia near the coast. Generally trained on trellises, it is pruned using the Guyot system.

Enologically, Franconia is suitable for both blending and vinification in purity. In Friuli, it can be found in the Colli Orientali del Friuli and Friuli Isonzo denominations, even as a single-variety wine. Franconia produces a wine with an intense color, with strong floral aromas of violets, fruity notes of cherries and raspberries, often with a spicy note. Franconia wines are light and fresh, with light tannins, and are suitable for youthful consumption. It is an excellent wine for fresh cold cuts or pasta dishes, but it also pairs well with roasted red meats or game.
