The Bussanello grape is a cross between the Furmint and Riesling Italico grape varieties, created in the 1930s by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso to improve the qualities of Furmint, which was then widespread in the Veneto but had the problem of berry shatter. Following its characterization by the Center for the Genetic Improvement of the Vine in Turin, the grape achieved some spread in Piedmont and was included in the National Register of Vine Varieties in 1977. It is mainly cultivated in the provinces of Alessandria, Asti, and Cuneo, although some rows can still be found in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In Monferrato, it is mostly vinified as a pure variety, which rarely happens in the Langhe.
