The Verdicchio Bianco grape variety is predominantly grown in the Marche region, particularly in the hills between Jesi and Matelica, where it has been present since the 8th century. Its name, as with other varieties like Verdeca and Verduzzo, derives from the greenish hue of its berries. Recent DNA studies have confirmed its genetic identity with the Trebbiano di Soave and Trebbiano di Lugana, suggesting the possibility that Verdicchio was introduced to the Marche by Veronese winemakers around the 1400s.
The National Vine Variety Registry recognizes the genetic equivalence of these Trebbiani but classifies them separately from Verdicchio, which indeed shows notable differences, especially in its aromatic profile. Additionally, the Trebbiano Verde, cultivated in Lazio, also appears to correspond to Verdicchio, as it lacks an independent classification in the National Vine Registry. However, the Lazio Verdicchio is noted for higher yields but lower quality compared to its superior Marche counterpart.
