Valentino (Incrocio Dalmasso 16.8) is a black grape variety currently cultivated on a limited scale in Piedmont, although it was originally developed at the Conegliano Research Center in Veneto in 1936. Its creator, Giovanni Dalmasso, claimed the grape was a cross between two Piedmontese varieties, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. However, DNA studies conducted in 2009 revealed that Valentino is actually the result of a cross between the French variety Chatus (known in Italy as Nebbiolo di Dronero) and Dolcetto.
The variety was officially approved for use in Italian wine production in 1977.
