The origins of Marzemina Bianca are ancient and deeply rooted in the history of Veneto. Although the name might suggest a connection with the better-known Marzemino (a red-berried variety), Marzemina Bianca is a distinct and independent variety with unique characteristics. Its presence has been documented since the 18th century, and it is believed to have been widely cultivated in the hilly areas of Treviso and near the Piave River. Like many other indigenous varieties, its cultivation declined during the 20th century due to a preference for more productive and well-known grape varieties, but it has recently experienced a phase of rediscovery and appreciation. Marzemina Bianca is primarily cultivated in the Veneto region, particularly in the provinces of Treviso and Vicenza. The vineyards are mainly located in hilly areas and in zones with well-drained, mineral-rich soils, which enhance the quality of the grapes. The proximity to the Piave River helps create an ideal microclimate, with good temperature variations that allow the grapes to develop distinctive aromatic profiles.
Ampelographically, Marzemina Bianca has medium-sized, pentagonal leaves, light green in color, and generally three- or five-lobed. The clusters are medium-large, conical, often winged, and fairly compact. The berries are small, round, and yellow-green, with a thick, resistant skin that provides good resistance to mold.
From an agronomic perspective, Marzemina Bianca is a vigorous and rustic grape variety that adapts well to various soil and climate conditions. It is a variety that resists climatic adversities well, such as late frosts and drought, and shows good tolerance to fungal diseases. However, its productivity can be inconsistent, which is why it requires careful and precise vineyard management. The harvest generally takes place in mid to late September when the grapes have reached optimal ripeness.
Wines produced from Marzemina Bianca are particularly appreciated for their freshness and aromatic finesse. Visually, the wines present a bright straw-yellow color with golden reflections that enhance their luminosity.
On the nose, Marzemina Bianca wines offer an elegant and complex aromatic bouquet, with floral notes of acacia and wildflowers, accompanied by fruity hints of green apple, citrus, and white peach. In some cases, mineral and slightly herbaceous nuances can be perceived, contributing to the olfactory complexity.
On the palate, these wines are characterized by a pleasant acidity and a balanced structure. They are fresh, light, and easy to drink, with a dry and clean finish, making them ideal as an aperitif or paired with fish dishes, appetizers, and fresh cheeses. Marzemina Bianca is sometimes also used for the production of sparkling wines, thanks to its good acidity and its ability to impart elegance and liveliness to the final product.
