“Malvasia Nera” is one of the black-berried grape varieties belonging to the Malvasia family, whose name derives from a contracted variation of Monembasia, a Byzantine stronghold perched on the rocks of a promontory in the south of the Peloponnese, where sweet wines were produced and later exported throughout Europe by the Venetians under the name of Monemvasia. Malvasia Nera is widespread in many regions of central and southern Italy, where it appears as different clones (Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, Malvasia Nera di Lecce, Malvasia Nera di Basilicata), and in Piedmont (Malvasia Nera Lunga). It is also found as Malvasia Nera in Tuscany, where, before being almost completely abandoned due to vinification challenges, it was part of the blend for Chianti, and in Trentino-Alto Adige, where it gives rise to the Alto Adige Malvasia DOC variety.
