Magliocco dolce, commonly called “Magliocco,” is a grape variety of certainly Greek origin, whose cultivation in Calabria has been known since medieval times. The name Magliocco is quite common in Calabria, as the region also cultivates Magliocco canino, with different morphology and territorial distribution. In fact, Magliocco dolce was originally prevalent on the Tyrrhenian side but is now also spreading to the Ionian side. The grape variety was registered in the National Register of Vine Varieties in 2019, but it is not yet included in any denomination of origin regulations in Calabria. It is difficult to find Magliocco dolce wines in purity, as it is mostly vinified in blends with Greco nero and Marsigliana nera.
The wine obtained from Magliocco dolce has a light ruby red color and is a structured, harmonious wine with medium-high alcohol content and good aging potential. These characteristics, combined with the lack of strong organoleptic features, make it ideal for blending, improving the intense and structured wines produced in its region of origin.
