Tocai Friulano is a native grape variety from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with ancient origins, and written records dating back over two centuries. It is believed to have been imported from Hungary into Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, but there are no similarities with any grape variety from that region. A ruling by the European Court of Justice in June 2008 resolved the long-standing dispute with Hungary over the denomination of the wine Tokaji. The name Tocai Friulano for the wine was lost and replaced with “Friulano” or “Tai” in Veneto. The DM of 25.09.2008 provides for the registration in the national register of grape varieties of the synonym «Friulano» for the variety of vine «Tocai friulano». Therefore, the correct name of the grape variety remains Tocai Friulano, and it is to this that we refer.
