The Pelaverga Piccolo grape has unclear origins, although it is well established that it originates from the Langhe region, where it is still cultivated, particularly in the area of the municipality of Verduno and parts of the municipalities of Roddi and La Morra, in the province of Cuneo. After being forgotten for a long time, it has regained interest among some local winegrowers. It should not be confused with the Pelaverga from the Saluzzo area, as there are notable differences, particularly in the size of the berry, which gives rise to the adjective “piccolo” (small).
The Pelaverga Piccolo grape has medium-to-large leaves, pentagonal, trilobed, or more rarely, pentalobed. Its bunches are medium to large, conical or elongated pyramidal, with one or more wings and are partially loose. The berries are medium to small, spherical to elliptical, with a blue-violet color and skins generously covered with pruina. Its yield is medium to high but inconsistent.
Pelaverga Piccolo thrives best in espalier training systems with mixed pruning, dry hillsides with good exposure. The wine produced from this grape variety is ruby red with violet reflections. On the palate, it is fruity, spicy, and full-bodied.
