The Friularo grape is a biotype of the Raboso Piave, an indigenous grape variety from the province of Treviso, and cultivated in the lower Padovana, of which it is technically a synonym. The original Raboso Piave grape presumably derives from the domestication of wild vines that grew spontaneously on the hills around the Piave River. Its name probably comes from “rabbioso,” meaning “angry,” which refers to the impression one gets when tasting the wine produced from this grape, noted for its high acidity and tannin content, which together create a decidedly astringent effect. From a biogenetic standpoint, it has nothing to do with Raboso Veronese, except for the fact that they both originate from the same region, Veneto.
