The Aleatico Wine Grape in Italy

Aleatico - The Grape and the Wines

The Aleatico grape variety has Greek origins and is primarily found in Tuscany, Puglia, and Lazio. Its spread is particularly notable along the Grosseto and Livorno coasts, while its presence in the southern regions is definitely less significant. Aleatico is considered a semi-aromatic variety, likely resulting from a mutation of a black-berried Muscat, which it vaguely resembles in flavor. Its ability to assimilate sugars, combined with its original aromatic qualities, makes it ideal for the production of sweet wines. It produces quality wines, both dry and sweet. Aleatico is included in many appellations, either as a pure varietal or as part of a blend, including the DOCG Elba Aleatico Passito in Tuscany, Aleatico di Gradoli in Lazio, and in Puglia, the DOC Aleatico di Puglia and Salice Salentino.
