Among the appellations of origin for the wines of Abruzzo, the most famous is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo delle Colline Teramane DOCG. This wine, compared to its counterpart from the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC appellation, must undergo one year of aging in wood before being released to the market. The Montepulciano grape also produces the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC rosé, a fruity, fresh, soft, full-bodied, and easy-drinking wine that pairs well with all dishes.
Other DOC appellations in Abruzzo include Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC and Controguerra DOC. The latter, with its diverse product types ranging from sweet wines to sparkling wines, made from either indigenous or international grape varieties, focuses on the territoriality of the product, as only five municipalities are involved. Recently, a generic regional appellation, Abruzzo DOC, was introduced, encompassing all the indigenous grape varieties of the Abruzzo region, including sparkling and sweet wine types.
In Abruzzo, in addition to the aforementioned Montepulciano d’Abruzzo delle Colline Teramane DOCG, there is also the Terre Tollesi or Tullum DOCG, established in 2019 from the pre-existing DOC. There are a total of seven DOC denominations and eight IGTs in the region.
