The Sciaglin grape variety is an indigenous white-skinned grape from Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It has been known in the hills of the Spilimbergo area since the 15th century. The name originates from “schiavolino”, meaning wine originating from Slavia, the region beyond the Julian Alps. Others suggest it comes from “s’ciale”, meaning terraces, referring to the locations where the grape variety performs best. Today, Sciaglin has a very limited distribution and is cultivated only in the areas of Pinzano al Tagliamento and Castelnovo del Friuli. Its decline is largely due to the tendency of many large producers to follow the trend of international varieties at the expense of traditional indigenous ones. Despite this, Sciaglin wines are known for their unique personality.
From an ampelographic perspective, Sciaglin is characterized by medium, cylindrical clusters with a conical-pyramidal shape, sometimes winged, and medium spherical berries with pruinose skins of an intense yellow color.
Sciaglin wines are noted for their personality, elegance, and good structure, with fruity and floral notes on a finely spiced background. On the palate, they have a well-defined structure and remarkable acidity, finishing with a lovely mineral character. The best pairings are with structured fish dishes or aromatic risottos, though they also perform well as standalone wines.
