The origin of the Malvasia di Sardegna grape variety dates back to the Byzantine era, and it certainly arrived on the island through the ports of Karalis (Cagliari) and Bosa. In fact, its greatest spread is in the Campidano di Cagliari and the hills of Planargia. There is a clear difference between the Malvasia wine produced in Campidano and that produced in Bosa, and this difference is not entirely attributable to the different pedoclimatic conditions. This fact would confirm the existence of two different clones of a single variety, which arrived in Sardinia in the two different areas, Campidano and Bosa. The Malvasia di Sardegna grape variety presents with large, cylindrical clusters, with few wings. The berries are generally large, with little bloom and beautiful golden colors. The ripening is medium-late, with good, consistent yields and good resistance to adversities. Malvasia di Sardegna is one of the aromatic Malvasia varieties.
The two cultivation areas of Malvasia di Sardegna, Campidano di Cagliari and Bosa, produce two different wines from an organoleptic point of view, as well as in terms of vinification. They also belong to two different designations of origin, namely Malvasia di Cagliari DOC and Malvasia di Bosa DOC. Malvasia di Cagliari DOC is produced in the province of Cagliari and part of Campidano dell’Oristanese and has paler colors. On the nose, it is more delicate and tends towards the classic fruity notes of fortified wines, honey, herbs, and more floral notes, with a fresher and more drinkable palate. Only the Riserva type undergoes barrel aging and is vinified both in dry and fortified versions. Aging on the lees for at least two years gives the wines a deep golden color, with a more pronounced and penetrating olfactory range, with clear sensations of honey and toasted almonds. On the palate, these are rich and alcoholic wines, with decidedly sweet and fruity flavors and slight herbal notes. In the area, vinifications are also practiced outside the denominations, producing well-crafted, non-aged sparkling wines in the demi-sec version. The pairings for both sweet wines produced from the Malvasia di Sardegna grape variety are classic dry and creamy pastries, but they are also excellent meditation wines, while the dry versions are ideal as aperitifs.
