The Baratuciat grape is a rather rare indigenous variety from Piedmont. Its cultivation is limited to Val Cenischia and Val di Susa. Its peculiar name seems to derive from the dialect expression “barat du ciàt,” meaning cat droppings, due to the elongated shape of its berries. It is a vigorous and resistant grape variety, which potentially can produce an intense and structured wine. The wine has a characteristic straw-yellow color, delicate and elegant aromas of white flowers, and over time, it develops rich mineral and fruity notes, with hints of pineapple and green apple. Its low distribution means there are very few producers cultivating it, and pure varietal wines are very rare. However, since its rediscovery, many wineries have been experimenting with Baratuciat, and the recognition of pure Baratuciat for the Valsusa DOC aims to promote its spread.
